This story is set in the Kimberley region of Western Australia in the last decades of the 19th century. Every year the Europeans are taking more and more Aboriginal land and there seems to be no way the uncoordinated black people can fight back — until a gifted young black man, Yungaburra, a former police trackier who knows how the whites think, leads an imaginative resistance of his own tribe, and for a time is successful in keeping the invasion at bay. Parallel to his story is that of a young English migrant Billy, somewhat of a misfit, who becomes Yungaburra’s best friend. But the racial tension tears their friendship apart.
